PRACTICAL GUIDES

Before you hire: checking contractor information

A good first step is to make sure the business you are talking to is the business you researched. Then bring the same practical questions to each conversation about your project.

Editorial date: October 8, 2026. Official sources can change; check their current information.

Match the name and the operation

Ask for the business name used on the proposal and the relevant registration or license information for the work. Compare those details with official records rather than relying on a logo, a search result, or a statement on a directory page.

Washington Labor & Industries provides a Verify tool for checking contractor, tradesperson, and business information. Read the current record and the source’s explanation of its fields. A record check is one part of deciding whom to hire; it is not a guarantee of workmanship or availability.

Make the project concrete

Describe the issue, your goals, location, and timing. Ask who will assess the work, whether there is an assessment fee, and what an estimate will include. Share photos only if they are useful, and avoid including household documents or other private details in the frame.

Ask which work is included, which materials or options are assumed, who will perform it, and how changes are approved. Discuss any permits or inspections with the business and the relevant local authority rather than assuming a general answer applies to your project.

Put the arrangement in writing

Compare written scopes, schedules, payment arrangements, cleanup, and the process for raising a concern. A lower total may cover a different scope. Ask for clarification before you sign, and keep copies of the agreement and any approved changes.

Confirm whether a company serves your address. A business listed as serving Tacoma is not necessarily based in Tacoma and may have travel or scheduling constraints. For urgent work, confirm current availability and any after-hours fees directly.

Keep the directory in perspective
